About the role

The Senior Purchasing Manager Storage (all genders) will be responsible for leading procurement activities for utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across BayWa r.e.’s global portfolio. This role owns the supplier strategy, sourcing activities, and technical-commercial evaluations for key BESS components, ensuring optimal cost, quality, and delivery performance.

The Senior Purchasing Manager Storage (all genders) plays a key role in shaping the global supplier landscape, driving standardization, and supporting the successful delivery of projects in close collaboration with Engineering, Project Management, Quality, and Finance. By combining strong technical understanding with commercial expertise, this position contributes directly to improving competitiveness and scaling BayWa r.e.’s energy storage business.

What you will do

Strategic Procurement & Category Management

  • Define and implement the global sourcing strategy for BESS components and system solutions

  • Develop and manage a preferred supplier portfolio, including performance management, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives

  • Drive long-term cost optimization strategies, including cost breakdown analysis and benchmarking

  • Support the evaluation of emerging technologies and system architectures in collaboration with Engineering

Technical Procurement & Supplier Management

  • Lead procurement of key BESS components such as battery systems, PCS/inverters, BMS/EMS interfaces, thermal and safety systems

  • Collaborate closely with Engineering teams on technical specifications, design optimization, and supplier alignment

  • Review supplier documentation, certifications, and compliance with international standards

  • Maintain structured technical comparison tools and supplier evaluation frameworks

Project Procurement & Contract Management

  • Define and execute procurement strategies for large-scale BESS projects

  • Lead contract negotiations for complex agreements, including warranties, performance guarantees, and service conditions

  • Identify sourcing risks and develop mitigation strategies (e.g. supply chain, logistics, technology maturity)

  • Support project teams during execution to ensure alignment on delivery timelines and technical requirements

Process Improvement & Governance

  • Continuously improve procurement processes, tools, and decision frameworks

  • Drive standardization and digitalization of procurement workflows

  • Maintain and develop price benchmarking and market intelligence databases

  • Support internal approval processes with structured technical and commercial assessments

Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams across Engineering, Finance, and Project Management

  • Support and mentor junior colleagues within the procurement organization

  • Ensure knowledge sharing and alignment across international teams

What you’ll need to succeed

  • A university degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial), Supply Chain, Business, or a comparable field with strong technical affinity

  • At least 5 years of experience in procurement or category management within renewable energy, energy storage, or electrical equipment

  • Strong understanding of BESS technologies, battery systems, and grid integration concepts

  • Experience with complex contract negotiations and supplier management in an international environment

  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills with the ability to translate technical requirements into procurement strategies

  • Proven ability to manage multiple stakeholders and drive cross-functional collaboration

  • Fluent in English
