Online interactions on the climate crisis will be reduced by 9% in Spain by 2023

to overview

As we approach the end of 2023, forecasts confirm that this will be the warmest year on record. However, the climate crisis does not seem to be a priority issue for Spanish internet users, since according to a Brandwatch study commissioned by BayWa r.e., online conversations on this topic have fallen by 9% in the last year. However, the global decline is even greater, at 12%.

In the context of COP28, which has just ended, the study also focuses on the mentions that Spaniards make in online channels about this annual summit, which have been reduced by 61% compared to COP26 in 2021. This is a notable decrease, which is nevertheless lower than the 73% reduction that has occurred globally. The study makes it clear that the interest of Spaniards in world climate summits has been decreasing since COP26, which obtained 16,369 mentions, to 7,960 at COP27 (-51%) and 6,330 at the recent COP28 (-20%).

On the other hand, if we talk about global threats, there are other issues that focus the attention of Spanish Internet users, such as AI, whose mentions have increased by 130% in the last year. In fact, allusions to this technology in conversations about global threats outnumber references to climate change by 34%. This figure is much higher than that observed globally, where AI exceeds climate change by only 8%.

Methodology

This research comes from a study conducted with Brandwatch on online conversations related to climate change, COP conferences and artificial intelligence. Over 41 million online data points were reviewed, analyzing trends on social media, news and blogging platforms, from January 2022 to November 2023.
